Lady Volunteers sweep Mohave
BULLHEAD CITY — The Lady T-birds led by four points early in the first set, but the Lady Volunteers took over from there on out.
Lee Williams High School swept the T-birds 18-25, 18-25, 10-25 during their 4A Arizona Interscholastic Association Grand Canyon Region volleyball match at Mohave High School on Tuesday.
After the T-birds led 6-2 early in the first set, the Volunteers went on a 14-6 run to make it 16-12. Senior Ashley Sahawneh went on a five-point service run, which included three aces to ice it.
Volunteers head coach Riley Blake said both teams came out to play in the first set. “It was kind of a serve game to see who got that ball going,” she said. “In the first set, both teams did really well, but we got that momentum and we kept that momentum.”
Juniors Lorelei Fernandez and Kalyse Whitehead served “super well” during the end of the first set, Blake said.
It was 3-3 early in the second set when the Volunteers slowly pulled away.
Sophomore Hannah Burgess’ block/kill cut Mohave’s deficit to 17-13, but the T-birds’ effort was riddled with service errors.
Fernandez recorded three consecutive service points, including one ace, to put the second set to rest.
T-birds head coach Zdenko Radic said the Volunteers had really good serves, and his T-birds really couldn’t get the ball to their setter. “It was just one of those nights,” he added.
LWHS’ record is 3-0, 1-0 in region and MHS’ is 2-1, 0-1 in region.
