Mitterrand Leaves Singapore for France With PM-France, Bjt

September 19, 1986

SINGAPORE (AP) _ President Francois Mitterrand of France left Singapore for Paris today after holding talks with Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew at Singapore’s airport.

Mitterrand’s brief stopover in Singapore came on his way home from a four- day state visit to Indonesia. There were no reports of what the two leaders discussed in their 45-minute meeting.

Security at the airport was tight because of a rash of terrorist attacks against French citizens in France and abroad in the last 10 days.

While in Indonesia, Mitterrand asked that several welcoming and sightseeing activities be canceled in view of the terrorist attacks, believed to have been carried out by groups seeking the release of Arabs convicted of terrorist acts who are being held in French jails.

Mitterrand, asked in Jojakarta, Indonesia Thursday about the attacks, declined to comment, as did other French officials contacted when the president’s 100-member delegation was at the Indonesian tourist island of Bali later Thursday.

But Mitterrand said at a news conference in Jakarta Wednesday that ″terrorism must be fought mercilessly. France will not be paralyzed by terrorists.″

The French leader said earlier he would see his Asian trip through to the end because cutting it short would be giving in to terrorism.

He will be met on his arrival in Paris later today by Premier Jacques Chirac and the two will then meet with Interior Minister Charles Pasqua and Security Minister Robert Pandraud to discuss the attacks.

Mitterrand will stop in Kuwait briefly on his flight to Paris.
