New Gore Staffer Named

November 1, 1999

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Kathleen Begala, the sister of prominent Democratic consultant Paul Begala, will be Al Gore’s new communications director.

Gore has had no communications director, the person normally put in charge of developing and disseminating a candidate’s message.

``I am pleased Kathleen has agreed to join our strong team in Nashville,″ Gore said. ``Her many years of communications and public affairs make her the right person for the job.″

Begala, who will assume her duties Nov. 8, currently is director of public affairs at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. She has worked there in a variety of high-ranking positions since 1994. Perviously, Begala worked as an advertising manager for several national magazines.

The vice president moved his campaign to Tennessee, reducing his staff by about half, in response to a surprisingly strong showing by sole rival Bill Bradley. At least two candidates for the communications director job had turned down the Gore campaign.
