Another county to pay graduates’ community college tuition
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Another Mississippi county will pay for some recent high school graduates to attend community college.
Local news outlets report local governments will cover any remaining tuition cost at Pearl River Community College for 2019 graduates of any Forrest County high school after accounting for federal, state and college aid.
Forrest County supervisors are contributing $100,000, while the Hattiesburg City Council is contributing $20,000.
The guarantee doesn’t include the cost of room, board or books.
High school graduates in dozens of counties statewide are covered by similar offers funded by local governments and private donors. However, efforts to extend tuition assistance across Mississippi have failed several times in the Legislature. Estimates in 2014 predicted it would cost about $4.5 million to fund a statewide program that would assist almost 7,000 students.
