English footballer gets 2-year doping ban

June 25, 2013

LONDON (AP) — An English footballer has been handed a two-year doping ban after he allowed his cousin to inject him with an anabolic steroid in a bid to end a succession of injury problems.

Gerard Kinsella, who plays for Fleetwood Town in England’s fourth tier, tested positive for nandrolone following an out-of-competition test in February.

The 21-year-old Kinsella was tipped for great things when he started out as a teenager at Everton but his career has stalled because of injuries, driving him to depression.

Kinsella said at an English Football Association hearing that his cousin Neil, a taxi driver, had injected the steroid on consecutive days in January because he thought it was pain-relieving medication.

Kinsella admitted to the doping charge and was banned from football on Tuesday until February 2015.
