Lady Trojans down Willowridge 3-0 in volleyball action
Sometimes the tension got a little thick, but when it was all said and done, South Houston High School’s varsity volleyball team had itself a non-district sweep.
The Lady Trojans repelled Game 2 and 3 threats from Willowridge to claim a 3-0 victory over the Lady Eagles at Phillips Field House Tuesday night.
South Houston won by scores of 25-16, 25-23, 25-20.
The Lady Trojans got out the brooms when the team scored five of the last six points in Game 3, turning a precarious 20-19 advantage into an early exit through the fieldhouse doors.
With Daniella Guzman headed to the serving line after Willowridge let a ball drop to the floor, she started with an ace. Then came a held ball call followed by an ineffective block that deposited South Houston at match point.
Guzman shanked her next serve, but what goes around comes around. Willowridge promptly served long and South Houston had its match point.
In Game 2, South Houston started out fast, leading 5-1, but by midway into the game, it was all deadlocked at 13-13 as the Lady Trojans had a spell in which their kill attempts weren’t finding the court.
South Houston’s drought even allowed Willowridge to pull ahead, going ahead by scores of 17-14 and 19-16.
But the Lady Trojans stopped Willowridge’s run in its tracks, piecing together their longest Game 2 streak of four points. The Lady Eagles never led again.
Although tied 22-22, a service error, an Ariel Evans kill and a Valeria Gonzalez kill brought home the sorely-needed middle-game victory.
The first game started out in nip-and-tuck fashion before South Houston pulled away, leading 24-12 at one point.
