Chesapeake girls open season with 40-29 win over Portsmouth Clay

CHESAPEAKE, Ohio - Maddie Ward’s 15 points and eight rebounds led Chesapeake past Portsmouth Clay 40-29 in the Panthers’ girls basketball opener Saturday.

Karli Davis scored 12 and Blake Anderson had nine rebounds and five steals.

Cameron Delotell and Jensen Warnock both scored nine for Clay (1-2).

Chesapeake’s next action is a 7:30 p.m. Monday home game against South Point.

HUNTINGTON ST. JOE 74, MORGANTOWN 30: Bailee Adkins scored 17 to help the Irish (2-0) pound the host Mohigans. Dena Jarrells scored 12, Paige Shy 11 and Dionne Gray 10.

COVENANT 44, GREATER BECKLEY 42: Eden Bumgardner and Karleigh Collins both scored in double figures to lead the Covenant Christian School Eagles (2-0) to a high school girls basketball win at Beckley. Grace Mitchell led all scorers with 22 points to lead Greater Beckley Christian in defeat.

COVENANT CHRISTIAN 11 14 9 10 - 44: Bumbardner 17, Collins 12, Hagley 6, Blankenship 5, Kelley 4.

GREATER BECKLEY CHRISTIAN 16 8 10 8 - 42: Mitchell 22, Neal 4, Moss, 6, Smith 4, Shively 6.

IRONTON ST. JOE 47, ROSE HILL CHRISTIAN 35: The Flyers (1-1) took advantage of 32 turnovers by the Royals to open the school’s new Parish Life Center Gym with a victory.

Faith Mahlmeister scored 14 and pulled down 14 rebounds for Ironton St. Joe. Emma Whaley scored 13. Bella Whaley scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Delaynee Sparks led Rose Hill Christian with 11 points.

WHEELERSBURG 41, MINFORD 35: Kaylee Darnell and Abbie Kallner each scored 13 as the Pirates defeated the Falcons. Alaina Kenny scored 11.

BOYD CO. 82, FLEMING CO. 30: Emma Borders scored 20 to lead the Lions in a rout of the Panthers in Summit, Kentucky.

Harley Paynter scored 18 and Savannah Wheeler 13 for Boyd County.

IRONTON ST. JOE 75, ROSE HILL CHRISTIAN 52: Zach Roach scored 16 to lift the Flyers (1-0) to victory in their first game at the school’s new Parish Life Center Gym.

Ryan Payne and J.C. Damron scored 15 each and Isaac Whaley 13 for Ironton St. Joe.

Stephan Barker scored 17 and snatched 10 rebounds to lead the Royals (0-2). Kenny Wilburn scored 18.

ROCK HILL 53, WELLSTON 32: The Redmen made 23 of 41 shots (56 percent) in beating the Rockets in Wellston, Ohio.

Kadin France started for Rock Hill, scoring 17 points and snaring 15 rebounds. R.J. Kemp and Brice Randolph paced Wellston with 10 points each.

EASTERN-MEIGS 64, RIVER VALLEY 61: Garrett Barringer scored 20 as the Eagles edged the Raiders in Reedsville, Ohio. Isaiah Fish scored 17 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Sharp Facemyer scored 10.

Jordan Lambert led River Valley with 24 points. Layne Fitch scored 16 and Brandon Call 10.

SOUTH GALLIA 70, SYMMES VALLEY 68: Nick Hicks scored 19, Braxton Hardy 18 and Eli Ellis 16 as the Rebels (1-0) nipped the Vikings (1-1) in Mercerville, Ohio.

Jack Leith led the Vikings with 30 points. Luke Leith scored 14 and Drew Scherol 10.

MEIGS 60, SOUTHERN 43: Weston Baer scored 20 and Zach Bartrum 17 as the Marauders beat the Tornadoes.

GREENUP CO, 69, RUSSELL 65: The Musketeers rallied from 14 points down to defeat the Red Devils in overtime in Lloyd, Kentucky.

Brady Nelson scored 19, all in the second half, for Greenup County. Tristan Miller led Russell with 22 points.
