October 2, 2018

A Fort Wayne woman has died more than two weeks after suffering critical injuries in a fire that prompted criminal charges against her estranged husband.

Lizzie Lee Caldwell’s death on Friday is a homicide, the Allen County coroner ruled Monday. There have been 36 homicides in Allen County this year.

Caldwell, 68, died from respiratory and renal failure due to thermal burns, the coroner said.

Her husband, Eddie Lee Caldwell, 54, was arrested Sept. 12 : the day of the fire : on charges of burglary with serious bodily injury, arson resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated battery and invasion of privacy.

The fire started about 9 a.m. at 5613 S. Harrison St.

A neighbor said Lizzie Lee Caldwell arrived at her house hysterical, smelling of gasoline and covered in burns to her shoulders, back and chest.
