LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Three bettors hit the trifecta for the first race at Churchill Downs on Sunday, which had a record payoff of $52,612.60.

Montreal's Best, a 45-1 first-time starter, won the 5-furlong race for 2-year-old maidens with Willie Martinez aboard. Afternoon Breeze, at 16-1, was second, followed by 34-1 longshot L.D. Operator.

None of the winning tickets were sold at Churchill Downs. One of the winners was purchased in New Jersey and the other two were sold in Pennsylvania.

The previous record for a trifecta payoff at the track was $48,613.40, set in 1992.
