Alternative Behavior Strategies Opens New Concord, NC, ABA Therapy Center For Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
CONCORD, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb 19, 2019--Alternative Behavior Strategies (ABS), a leading provider of services to children with autism spectrum disorders, today announced the grand opening of its newest North Carolina ABA (applied behavioral analysis) therapy center. Located in Concord, the office is approximately 20 miles northeast of Charlotte.
The addition of this new center is significant because the benefits of children receiving center-based services far outweigh the logistics of travel and other potential issues that may be encountered by families. Centers provide a greater opportunity for the progress and effectiveness of participants’ treatment because there are fewer distractions, a greater amount and quality of supervision, and more opportunities for socialization and generalization, all of which correlates to better outcomes. 1
It has been clinically proven that early intervention helps children reach their greatest potential, and this new ABA center provides top quality care for those children under six years of age who have been prescribed intensive ABA therapy. It offers extended access, which enables parents to drop off their child to undergo therapy for six to eight hours at a time, and, because the child is in the same space and working with the same behavioral interventionists, there is additional consistency. During ABA therapy, the children have enhanced oversight and supervision by their therapy team, as well as a controlled and less distracting environment while they undergo increasing intensity during therapeutic sessions.
For older children who have been prescribed focused ABA therapy, this new center provides a collaborative care approach in a controlled environment that has fewer variables and distractions affecting care. The group environment of the center provides effective reinforcement to help children more quickly learn and acquire skills; for example, self-care, social and functional living skills that help children develop independent living and community integration skills. The center also provides parental support with family systems education, behavioral training and individual and group therapy. Additionally, there are motor development and sensory treatment rooms.
ABA therapy is a clinically proven method of treatment that is the most frequently recommended therapy to help children with autism. It is also the only treatment for ASD that has been designated as medically necessary; so it is increasingly covered by health insurance providers, making it an accessible treatment option for more families. It is an intense treatment that can require up to 40 hours of therapy per week in order for the child to receive the maximum benefit. Undergoing center-based treatment, as will be possible at the new ABS ABA therapy center, enables the child to have his or her prescribed number of treatment hours and appropriate level of intensive care with minimal family disruption.
“Every child with autism spectrum disorder has his or her individual challenge(s) and needs a specialized treatment program,” says Jeff Skibitsky, MA, BCBA, LBA, president of ABS. “At ABS, we use a collaborative care approach in conjunction with a customized ABA therapy program for each child to close the gap between the child’s level of functioning and that of peers who are developing more normally. Not only is there a united team of professionals, including physicians, specialized therapists and schools collaborating for the benefit of the child, but the family is also an integral part of the team. The benefits of this therapeutic approach for children are countless, as all team members bring their own specialized knowledge and skills to bear on the child’s behalf to help him or her reach full potential.”
In addition to the Concord ABA office, ABS has also opened four facilities in North Carolina that specialize in psych services in the cities of Charlotte, Clemmons, Kernersville, as well as Concord.
