Salt Lake City to Host 2002 Winter Olympics

June 16, 1995

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) _ Salt Lake City was picked today to host the 2002 Winter Olympics, ending a three-decade campaign that included four previous defeats.

Salt Lake was selected over three other candidates: Ostersund, Sweden; Quebec, Canada; and Sion, Switzerland.

The decision was announced by IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch after a secret ballot by the International Olympic Committee.

The exact vote count was not immediately announced.

The Utah capital, which four years ago narrowly lost the right to host the 1998 Winter Games to Nagano, Japan, had been regarded as the favorite.

Salt Lake will bring the Winter Olympics to the United States for the first time since the 1980 Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.
