COLLEGE: Dunmore's Dempsey Gets Contract Extension At Binghamton U.

Dunmore native and Binghamton University men’s basketball coach Tommy Dempsey received a two-year extension Tuesday, with the 44-year-old now under contract through the 2020-21 season. Dempsey, who is in his seventh year with the Bearcats, was in the final year of his existing contract. “I believe strongly in the future success of our program under Tommy’s leadership,” Binghamton director of athletics Patrick Elliott said in a press release. “We have an exciting group of athletes who I believe will be a big part of that success. In addition to the bright future on the court, the culture of academic excellence and citizenship that Tommy has built is exemplary and is consistent with our expectations at Binghamton.” Efforts to reach Dempsey were unsuccessful Tuesday. Dempsey’s program earned a National Association of Basketball Coaches Team Academic Excellence Award in 2018 for maintaining a grade-point average above a 3.0. Four times during his coaching career his teams have received that award for having an Academic Progress Rate score in the top 10 percent of the nation. A 16-year collegiate head coach with 254 career wins, Dempsey’s teams set single-season win records at Keystone College (29), Lackawanna College (33) and Rider University (23).
