Patterson to be honored at Florence event as ‘Good Neighbor of the Year’
FLORENCE, S.C. – At the Good Neighbor Gala on Thursday at the Florence Little Theatre, Lighthouse Ministries will honor R. Weston Patterson as the “Good Neighbor of the Year.”
He will be recognized and given the Good Neighbor Award for supporting the mission and working with it to obtain “The Patterson Building” at 1416 W. Evans St.
The money raised at the gala will be used to continue Lighthouse Ministries’ mission to serve families and individuals in Florence County who are struggling to meet their basic needs.
Patterson has demonstrated a strong commitment to the Florence community. He served 16 years on the Florence City Council. He also was the chairman of the City-County Airport Commission, vice president of the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Florence Housing Authority.
Patterson founded the Florence Speech and Hearing Clinic. He also served as founding director of the Florence United Way, director of the South Carolina Easter Seal Society and chairman of the Florence County Disabilities Foundation.
He was active in the Florence Kiwanis Club and served as director of the Francis Marion University Foundation. He received an honorary doctor of humanities degree from Francis Marion University in 2009. In Columbia, he served on the board for C&S Bank, SCE&G and Still Hopes Retirement Community.
In the insurance and real estate business for 60 years, Patterson was president and owner of Cormell-Streett & Patterson Insurance Agency. He was active as state president of the board of directors for Independent Insurance Agents of America, and chairman of the Southern Agents Conference. He received the Hayne P. Glover Agent of the Year award for South Carolina.
Patterson is a member of St. Johns Church and was married to his wife, Emily, for 72 years. Emily died in February of this year. They have four children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
