Japanese Trawler Seized by Soviets
TOKYO (AP) _ The Soviet Union has seized a Japanese fishing boat in Soviet waters, an official from the Maritime Safety Agency said Sunday.
Agency spokesman Mitsuru Akiyama said the No. 103 Koryo Maru, a 125-ton trawler with 16 crewmembers aboard, was seized southeast of Cape Nossapu, 680 miles northwest of Tokyo, at around 2:45 a.m. Saturday (1:45 p.m. EDT Friday).
He said the fishing boat was within territory claimed by the Soviets.
The Foreign Ministry has asked the Soviet Union for an explanation of the seizure, Akiyama said.
