Donovan Interim Coach for WNBA Team
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Anne Donovan, a three-time Olympian and member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, has been hired as interim coach of Indiana’s WNBA expansion team.
Donovan will coach the team, which begins play next summer, while head coach Nell Fortner fulfills her obligation with the U.S. Women’s National Team through the 2000 Olympic Games. Donovan will then become Fortner’s top assistant.
Donovan was a three-time All-American at Old Dominion, as well as the 1983 Player of the Year.
``Being an interim coach is different and it hasn’t been done in the WNBA before,″ Donovan said. ``It’s a unique opportunity and a great opportunity ... to build a great team in Indiana.″
Donovan previously coached the Philadelphia Rage of the now-defunct ABL and at East Carolina. She was an assistant with Fortner on the 1998 world championship team.
``I’ve known Anne for many years,″ Fortner said. ``We’re very fortunate to have someone of her caliber come in and help us get this team off the ground.″
