Klevchenja Wins Speedskating Title

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands (AP) _ Christine Witty became women’s champion at the 27th World Sprint Speedskating Championships, setting a track record of 1 minute, 19.97 seconds in her second 1,000-meter victory.

Witty, the overnight leader, was 11th in the 500, her weaker event. But her 1,000 time was good enough for a a winning points total of 161.170.

Edel Theres Hoiseth of Norway was second with 161.350. Franziska Schenk of Germany was third with 162.270 points after finishing second in the 1,000 with a time of 1:20.30.

Catriona Lemay of Canada won the women’s 500 in 39.96. Tomomi Okazaki of Japan was second in 40.01 and Hoiseth was third in 40.10.

Sergei Klevchenja of Russia won the men’s title after winning his second 1,000-meter race.

Hiroyasu Shimizu of Japan won the 500 in 35.95 seconds, to improve on his winning time Saturday of 36.26.

Klevchenja’s time of in the 1,000 gave him a winning points total of 145.655. Shimizu was second in the 1,000 in 1:13.22. He also was second overall with 146.135 points.
