Kamala Harris sees herself as a ‘proud American’

January 21, 2019

Asked to define herself as a child of a Jamaican father or a mother who was an immigrant from India, Sen. Kamala Harris said Monday she’s a “proud American.”

Ms. Harris, who earlier announced she’s running for the Democratic 2020 presidential nomination, vowed to listen to voters as she builds her campaign, but brushed aside questions about why she thinks she’s better than others in the large field of potential contenders.

“I think the voters will decide,” she said.

Ms. Harris is the fourth Democratic woman to take formal steps toward a campaign. The first-term senator encouraged more Democrats to jump into the ring, saying that a crowded field is a “robust signal” of democracy.

She avoided saying what her own path to victory might look like, but said she will campaign “through all the states that are the 50 states of the United States.”

As a party, the Democrats need to be aware of geographic, ethnic and gender diversity as they reach out to voters, Ms. Harris said.

One reporter asked Ms. Harris how, as an “Indian-American,” she defines herself.

“How do I describe myself? I describe myself as a proud American,” she said.
