NEW YORK (AP) _ Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals and Tom Glavine of the Atlanta Braves were selected Monday as the National League Player and Pitcher of the Month for April.

McGwire hit 10 home runs and drove in 32 runs during the month. He batted .310, scored 20 runs and had a slugging percentage of .738.

Glavine won four of five starts in April, striking out 25 batters in 34 innings and posting a 1.06 earned run average.

Other candidates for the player award were Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves and Mike Piazza of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Curt Schilling of the Philadelphia Phillies and relievers Robb Nen of the San Francisco Giants and Rod Beck of the Chicago Cubs were other nominees for the pitcher award.
