Iran’s president plans to visit Oman

March 11, 2014

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s foreign ministry spokeswoman says President Hassan Rouhani will travel to neighboring Oman, the first official visit to an Arab country by the president since he took office in 2013.

Marzieh Afkham told reporters on Tuesday that Rouhani will be accompanied by a ranking economic delegation on the two-day visit, which starts Wednesday and aims to boost relations.

It is the first visit by the moderate president to a neighboring Arab country. He has repeatedly vowed to improve relations with neighboring countries.

Iran and Oman lie on opposite sides of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the waterway through which one fifth of the world’s oil supply travels.

Oman has traditionally had good relations with Iran and acted as a mediator between Tehran and the West.
