Defending Champion Medalist in Mid-Am
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Defending champion Jerry Courville of Milford, Conn., shot a 6-under-par 65 on Sunday at the Hartford Golf Club to take medalist honors in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
``I know it only qualifies me to get into match play, but you still want to play as well as you can play,″ said Courville, who had a 4-under 139 total. ``It’s always nice to do it in your back yard.″
John Pate of Santa Barbara, Calif., the older brother of PGA Tour player Steve Pate, finished a stroke back, shooting a 1-under 71 on the Tumble Brook Country Club course.
John Harris of Edina, Minn., the 1993 U.S. Amateur champion, was two back at 141 after a 69. Kevin Foster of Simsbury, Conn., and Mark Thaxton of Rock Hill, S.C., tied for fourth at 142.
The 264-man field in the 25-and-over championship was cut to the low 64 for match play at the Hartford Golf Club. The championship match is scheduled for Thursday.
