Texas A&M 66, SW Louisiana 0
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) _ Branndon Stewart passed for two touchdowns and ran for two and Dante Hall returned a punt 70 yards for a score Saturday as Texas A&M avenged an upset loss of a year ago in a 66-0 victory over Southwestern Louisiana.
Texas A&M (2-0) was ready this time for the Ragin’ Cajuns, who used eight Aggie turnovers in a 29-22 upset last season in Lafayette, La.
The Aggies, who haven’t allowed a touchdown in two games, left no doubt, scoring on seven of nine first-half possessions for a 45-0 halftime lead. It was Texas A&M’s biggest victory margin since a 73-0 thumping of Missouri in 1993.
USL’s Brandon Stokley caught five passes for 60 yards and became the school’s all-time leading receiver with 176 career catches, breaking the record of 172 by Wayde Butler (1989-1992).
But he suffered a sprained left knee on an incomplete pass late in the second quarter and did not return.
USL played without injured quarterback Barton Folse, sidelined with a broken finger. His backup, Brian Soignier left the game in the second quarter with a bruised knee and Lance Domec finished the game.
Stewart, who threw four interceptions to the Cajuns last season, got the rout started with a 1-yard dive with 11:36 to go in the first quarter. Hall had a 1-yard touchdown run, Stewart hit Chris Cole with a 41-yard touchdown pass and Kyle Bryant kicked a 42-yard field goal to complete the first quarter.
Hall’s second career punt return for a touchdown highlighted the second quarter with 7:15 left in the period. Hall had a 69-yarder last season against Iowa State.
Stewart’s 8-yard touchdown pass to D’Andre Hardeman with 5:36 to play and freshman Burnest Rhodes’s 1-yard run gave the Aggies their halftime lead.
Stewart added a 1-yard touchdown dive with 3:26 to go in the third quarter, two plays after Sedrick Curry intercepted a pass by USL’s Lance Domec at the Cajun 6-yard line.
USL had eight turnovers, including five in the second half, the last a 19-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Sean Coryatt with 2:12 left in the game.
Stewart hit 6 of 11 pases for 105 yards and one interception.
