Hazleton Tops Abington Heights For Trip To Final

HAZLETON — Earlier in the night, Hazleton Area had to rally past West Scranton in the quarterfinals Friday night.

In the semifinals, the Cougars made sure to put Abington Heights away early.

With three pins and a major decision in its first four matches, Hazleton Area rolled to a 48-21 win over Abington Heights to advance to the District 2 Class 3A team dual final.

“We matched up better against Abington (Heights) starting at (182 pounds) than we did against West Scranton,” Maurer said. “Getting out to an early start makes things a bit easier, I guess.

“It was just a matter of keeping them focused. When you’re out front like that, a hiccup here or there doesn’t get too exciting.”

The Cougars will face Delaware Valley, a 36-25 winner over Honesdale, today at 1:30 p.m. at Pittston Area High School for a trip to Hershey.

Jake Marnell set the tone at 182 pounds for Hazleton Area, pinning Aidan Price in the second period.

Jayson Brielmeier (195) followed that up with a major decision before back-to-back, first-period pins from Seth Hunsinger (220) and Shane Noonan (285).

“They had momentum,” Abington Heights coach Steve Peters said. “They’re a strong team and frankly I think they’re going all the way.”

Brandon Grogan (106) and Cole Kroptavich (113) cut the deficit to 22-12 with back-to-back pins before Beck Hutchison (120) recaptured the momentum with a pin.

Jorven Rodrieguez (126) and Christian Kislan (132) major decisions and an Abington Heights forfeit at 138 clinched the match for the Cougars.

A co-Division I champ, after a 1-3 Lackawanna League mark last season, Abington Heights moves on to the consolation semifinal today at 10:30 a.m. at Pittston Area High School.

“I’m proud of them,” Peters said. “I think they should be proud of themselves. We’ve got a good group of seniors who have let us through some tough times and we’ve come out on the other side now. All we have to do now is just work as hard as we did to get here to stay here.”

In the quarterfinals, Austin Fashouer (106) and Aiden Kologe (113) had two straight pins as West Scranton jumped out to a 22-13 lead over Hazleton Area with seven bouts left.

Then, the Cougars chipped away.

Hutchison’s (120) decision over Tony Caramanno and a West Scranton forfeit tied that match at 22.

Kislan (132) pinned Xavier Bronson in the first period to break the tie and from there the Cougars won their next three matches to seal the 40-28 win.

“Going into this last week I said that we just have to wrestle and we’ll be fine, but all those teams up there make me a little nervous,” Hazleton Area coach Keith Maurer said. “The Lackawanna League had some pretty good parity up there. They beat each other up.

“I think we beat two good teams and tomorrow we’re going to try to take the same approach that we took today and just go out and wrestle and let the chips fall. If they do, I think we should be OK.”

Noonan finished with two first-period pins.

“He’s wrestling very well. He had a great tournament last week, beating two undefeated kids, state-ranked kids,” Maurer said. “As far as the wrestling room is concerned, he’s doing good things right now and we just hope to keep him going.”

West Scranton defeated Coughlin, 48-21, in the first-round consolation to move on to today.

The Invaders will face Honesdale at 10:30 a.m. at Pittston Area High School.
