Colts promote Kenyan rugby player to active roster
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Linebacker Daniel Adongo could get his first real chance to play American football at Cincinnati on Sunday. The Indianapolis Colts have promoted the Kenyan rugby star to the 53-man active roster.
At 6-foot-5, 257 pounds (1.96 meters, 117 kilograms), Adongo was such an intriguing prospect the Colts signed him in July just before training camp opened even though he had never played American football. When the season began in September, the Colts stashed him on the practice squad, giving him more time to adapt to his new sport.
Adongo came to the Colts from the Southern Kings, the South African Super Rugby franchise for whom he played as a backup lock-flanker in a handful of games this year.
He played in South Africa’s second-tier championship in the first halves of 2011 and 2012 before playing in New Zealand’s second-tier competition for Counties Manukau, and signing on for the Kings.
