Dr., Wife, Daughter Found Dead in NY

January 6, 2001

NEW YORK (AP) _ A physician, his wife and their daughter died after fumes from the man’s apparent suicide overcame everyone in the house, police said.

The couple’s two other young daughters and the housekeeper were hospitalized.

Police on Saturday were called to the family’s home in affluent Old Brookville, N.Y., when they were notified that the wife, Rhonda Leopold, had failed to show up for an appointment.

Arriving on the scene, they smelled gas fumes and found Leopold’s 44-year-old husband, Richard, dead in the garage. Detectives suspect it was suicide, said Officer Patrick Byrne, a police spokesman. No motive had been established.

Rhonda Leopold was found dead in the house with her three daughters. Allison Brooke Leopold, 5, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Kimberly, 2, and Jacelyn, 8, were in critical condition. The condition of the family’s live-in housekeeper, Beverly Greene, was not immediately known.
