SALUDA, S.C. (AP) — A high ranking official in a South Carolina sheriff’s office has been charged with driving under the influence.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said Samuel Berkheimer, one of his deputy chiefs, was arrested Tuesday night at a safety checkpoint on state Highway 391 in Saluda County near Lake Murray.

Lott says Berkheimer was driving his own vehicle and was not in uniform.

Lott said in a statement that Berkheimer is over the Richland County Sheriff Department’s professional standards, training and civil process units. He is one of five deputy chiefs that serve directly under the sheriff.

Court records didn’t list a lawyer for Berkheimer.

Lott says Berkheimer has been suspended without pay while his department does an internal investigation.
