Golfers Shafer, Davidson Lead PBA
MILFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Ryan Shafer and Dede Davidson lead the men’s and women’s fields Tuesday after the third round of the BPAA U.S. Open.
Shafer had a high game of 279 and rolled seven of eight games over 200 during the final round of the initial qualifying portion of the tournament.
He leads Steve Wilson by 90 pins. Shafer has dropped 5,615 pins and is averaging 233 for the 24 games of qualifying. Wilson has knocked down 5,525 pins.
Harry Sullins, the first-round leader, sits in third with 5,517 pins. Rounding out the top five are Billy Orlikowski, with 5,449 pins, and Eugene McCune, 5,472.
Davidson used high games of 246 and 244 to maintain the women’s lead with a 229 average and a 5,509 pinfall total. She leads Jackie Mitskavich by 97 pins. Kim Canady, Tammy Turner and Sandra Jo Odom round out the top five.
Competition continues Wednesday with the top 45 bowlers on each side rolling eight final games of qualifying before the fields are trimmed to the top 24. The championship will be held Saturday.
