Joe DiMaggio Still in ICU

November 26, 1998

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) _ Joe DiMaggio remained in the intensive care unit on Thursday as he recuperated from lung cancer surgery, but he had been moved to a larger room.

``They switched rooms on his birthday, and now more of his family can visit at the same time,″ said Morris Engelberg, DiMaggio’s attorney and longtime friend.

The Hall of Famer was buoyed by a visit from his great granddaughters, Valerie, 9, and Vanessa, 11, on Wednesday when they marked his 84th birthday by singing Happy Birthday.

``They delight him whenever he sees them, and they brightened his day,″ Engelberg said.

Engelberg said the Yankees great could leave the intensive care unit at Regional Memorial Hospital during the weekend, depending on how Dr. Earl Barron rates his progress.

Barron is the lead doctor on a team of six who have been treating DiMaggio since he was admitted Oct 12.

DiMaggio is recovering from a lung infection, the most serious complication of his surgery on Oct. 14 when a cancerous tumor was removed from his right lung.

In response to a question, Engelberg said tests the day before surgery determined that there was no spread of the disease to DiMaggio’s liver, kidney or brain.
