Princeton council race tied; absentee ballots next

April 4, 2019

PRINCETON, Ill. (AP) — Absentee ballots could break a tie in a race for city council in a western Illinois community.

Robin Swift and Jerry Neumann each emerged Tuesday with 771 votes in Princeton. Swift said she wanted to concede the race to Neumann, the incumbent, and run again in the future. But the Bureau County clerk says there were five absentee ballots that hadn’t been received.

The News-Tribune says the deadline for their delivery is 14 days, and they must be postmarked by election day.

Swift says she’ll accept the council seat if she wins. But if there’s still a tie, she says she doesn’t want the seat. A coin toss is held after a tie.
