JEAN, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say one person is dead after a small plane crash and fire near an airport off Interstate 15 south of Las Vegas.

Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday that the single-engine propeller plane was destroyed by flames after it crashed under unknown circumstances about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday not far from the Jean Sport Aviation Center.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says it's not clear how many people were aboard.

Clark County Deputy Fire Chief Larry Haydu says firefighters found one person dead at the scene.

The Nevada Highway Patrol tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal the crash was in a desert area between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard South.
