Taco Amigo in Pleasant Grove to hold second Day of Giving

March 15, 2019

For the second year in a row, Pleasant Grove’s Taco Amigo will be holding a Day of Giving.

The daylong event will be held Saturday and all proceeds will be donated to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

Not only will all of the money from sales be donated, but all employees who work that day will be donating their time. About 70 employees are planning to work for free on that day.

Last year, the restaurant, located at 239 E. State St., filled 1,200 different orders and served more than 7,000 customers on the Day of Giving. This year, they are hoping to do even more.

The Day of Giving began as a way for the Taco Amigo family to heal from a loss. Last year, the Keetch family, owners of Taco Amigo, lost a family member to cancer. Elder Von G. Keetch, who was serving as a general authority for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the time of his death, would have celebrated his 59th birthday this month. The Day of Giving will be a way to honor this day, according to Keetch’s daughter, Steffani Dastrup.

“He was so involved in all of our lives, and his passing left a huge void within each one of us,” Dastrup said. “But one thing he taught us was, ‘If you don’t like your lot in life, build a service station on it.’ So we decided to turn our heartache into hope for others.”

That is when the idea for the Day of Giving was born. This will be an annual event, according to Dastrup, although the recipients of the donations may change from year to year. Serving together as a family has helped the Keetch family to heal, she said.

The goal for last year’s Day of Giving was to raise $10,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. But that goal was exceeded. Taco Amigo donated 100 percent of each sale on March 17, 2018, which came to $22,164.49. Customers donated another $7,779.66, although the restaurant did not specifically ask for donations.

Dastrup said the family hopes to see many customers in Taco Amigo on this year’s Day of Giving. But, if people cannot come that day and still want to help, they can make a donation to Huntsman Cancer Foundation through the website at http://tacoamigocares.org.
