Can the Man wins Affirmed Stakes at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Can the Man won the $100,000 Affirmed Stakes for 3-year-olds by 1 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita on Saturday.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, Can the Man ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.27 and paid $5.80, $3.60 and $3 as the 9-5 favorite in the field of eight.
Friendswith K Mill returned $3.80 and $2.80, while Forever Juanito was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $3.60 to show.
Can the Man had been idle since winning the Speak Easy Stakes on Oct. 14.
“He’s been working really good and we were hoping he’d be ready,” said Garcia, who had ridden Can the Man in all four of his previous starts. “He’s a fast horse and he’s more mature now with the time off.”
The victory, worth $60,000, increased Can the Man’s career earnings to $216,000, with his third win.
A crowd of 31,208 was on hand to cheer on Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome, who has run four times at Santa Anita. But they went home disappointed after the chestnut colt finished in a dead-heat for fourth in the Belmont Stakes in New York.
Baffert won the $500,000 Brooklyn Invitational on the Belmont undercard with Bayern.
