No. 2 Stanford 85, UC Santa Barbara 52
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) _ Senior Chris MacMurdo had a career high 23 points and six rebounds to lead second-ranked Stanford to an 85-52 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
Anita Kaplin added 15 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks and guard Christy Hedgpeth added a career best 10 rebounds for Stanford.
The Cardinal started slowly, scoring only six points in the first 8 minutes, but took the lead for good at 10-8 and gradually pulled away.
Final exams being Monday at Stanford and the Cardinal was ragged at times, but Stanford’s defense, rebounding and depth were too much for UCSB. The Gauchos also had no answer for MacMurdo.
The Cardinal’s starting forward was off to a slow start scoring only 19 points in the team’s first four games, but she surpassed her season total early in the second half. MacMurdo was 9 of 9 from the free throw line.
Stanford outrebounded the Gauchos 57-35, forced 30 turnovers and Cardinal players were all over the floor diving for loose balls.
Cori Close led UCSB with 13 points and five assists but was forced into 11 turnovers.
The Cardinal’s record improved to 4-1 while the Gauchos fell to 0-3.
