Champion Canadian skier John Kucera retiring

April 24, 2014

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Canadian skier John Kucera is retiring after a career in which he won a world downhill title and was sidelined for three seasons by a broken leg.

The 29-year-old Kucera won three World Cup medals, two of them in Lake Louise, Alberta. He didn’t ski at the Sochi Olympics because of a severe inner ear condition that prevented him from racing.

He won the world downhill title in 2009 in Val d’Isere, France. But a broken leg that year kept him out of the 2010 Winter Olympics and cost him three seasons of competition. He returned to skiing in 2012.

Kucera was the first Canadian to win at Lake Louise, in 2006 in the super-G.
