Arkansas Tech 87, Montana St.-Northern 67
TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ Arkansas Tech overpowered Montana State-Northern as David Bevis scored 26 points in an 87-67 victory Friday that puts the Wonder Boys in the NAIA tournament semifinals for the first time in 40 years.
Bevis scored 14 points in the first half as Arkansas Tech (29-5) raced out to a 19-point lead on two occasions before settling for a 41-24 lead at intermission.
The Lights (17-19) hit their first three shots of the second half and still looked poised for a run when Ty Ridgeway hit a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 47-34. But Tremain Arnold hit a 3-pointer and Bevis scored three times inside to establish control again.
Even without Bevis, the Wonder Boys put on a show from outside. Chad Keaster had six 3-pointers and, on 14-0 run midway through the second half, Arkansas Tech hit four 3s sandwiched around inside shots by Bevis and Thayer McKinley for a 75-43 lead.
John Briney led Northern with 14 points, while Doug Smith and Kevin Owens had 10 each.
The Wonder Boys last reached the semifinals in 1955, losing to East Texas State. They are making their first appearance in the NAIA tournament since 1970.
