LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic (AP) _ The paper that broke the news that the king of pop and the daughter of the King were tying the knot claims to have another scoop: O.J. Simpson is flying to the Dominican Republic to marry model Paula Barbieri.

But Simpson's top lawyer, Johnnie Cochran Jr., denied the report in the Dominican newspaper Listin Diario, and there was no sign of the recently acquitted football great in the Dominican Republic today.

On Sunday, Listin Diario quoted unidentified sources as saying Simpson and Barbieri left Los Angeles on Saturday for Miami and were to fly on a private plane to the Dominican Republic the next day.

Reporters staked out the airport where Simpson's plane reportedly was to arrive Sunday until it shut down for the night. Simpson never showed up. In another front-page story today, Listin Diario reported that it could not confirm Simpson's arrival at any airport in the Caribbean nation.

Sources close to Simpson said he was at his Brentwood estate on Sunday and has no immediate marriage plans, the New York Daily News reported today.

Barbieri, who has been living in Panama City, Fla., since July, was also at her home, sources and neighbors said Sunday, the newspaper reported.

Cochran told KCBS-TV in Los Angeles on Sunday that ``there's no truth to that (the Listin Diario report) at all.'' Cochran said he spoke to Simpson on Saturday.

According to the report, the couple was traveling with Simpson lawyer F. Lee Bailey and friends Al ``A.C.'' Cowlings and Roger King.

Dominican immigration officials would not comment, and several Dominican airports and the U.S. Embassy said they had no information on a possible trip.

Listin Diario broke the news of Michael Jackson's marriage to Lisa Marie Presley in the Dominican Republic last year. The country offers speedy marriages that require only one witness and a brief ceremony in front of a judge.

The Simpson marriage rumors surfaced in the Italian media on Friday, three days after a Los Angeles jury acquitted Simpson in the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman after the most-watched trial in history.

On Friday, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica quoted Barbieri's brother, Michael, as saying she and Simpson wanted to marry ``soon'' and that the plan angered her father. The Rome daily said Vincent Barbieri opposed such a marriage and now says, ``I don't have a daughter any more.''

Simpson began seeing Barbieri in 1992 after he separated from his wife. He escorted Barbieri to a Beverly Hills party the night before the killings, and she visited frequently while he was jailed during his trial.

Barbieri, believed to be 26 or 27, was born and raised in Florida. She has modeled for Playboy and posed for Victoria's Secret and Vogue. She also appeared in United Paramount Network's ``The Watcher,'' a TV movie in which she played a drug lord's physically abused girlfriend.
