ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) _ Fans paying $37.50 a seat to see Emmitt Smith, Leon Lett and Nate Newton play basketball ended up watching Ed ``Too Tall″ Jones and unknowns Rodney Woods, Alfredo Roberts and Michael Goosby.

``I know Michael Irvin, Lincoln Coleman and Kevin Williams, but I’ve never heard of some of the other guys,″ Dallas Cowboys fan Wayne Stout said. ``And I was shocked to see Too Tall Jones out there. The guy’s a dinosaur.″

Five of the 15 players in Monday night’s charity game with San Francisco didn’t play in the 49ers’ victory over the Cowboys in the NFC title game.

``Some guys were unable to make it,″ promoter Bill Ekeroth said. ``So some guys filled in.″

Irvin scored 27 points, but San Francisco won 82-76. The proceeds from the game at Trump Taj Mahal were to go to the American Cancer Society.


SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) _ Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona is set to join the Brazilian club Santos, the team that once featured Pele.

Maradona, 34, who quit his job coaching an Argentine club, is under suspension until September for failing a drug test in last year’s World Cup.

``This would be a fresh start for him,″ said Pele, Brazil’s special minister for sports and the director of international affairs for Santos.

Pele Sports and Marketing, the sports promotion company owned by Pele, is to sign Maradona next week, said Pele’s business partner Roberto Seabra.

``All we have to do is complete the pool of sponsors who will put up the money needed to buy Maradona,″ Seabra said.

He would not say how much money was involved, but newspapers have speculated Maradona’s contract could be worth $5 million.


MILAN, Italy (AP) _ Roberto Baggio, soccer’s world player of the year in 1993, may be put up for sale by Juventus of Turin.

The Agnelli family, which controls Fiat and owns the team, wants the 28-year-old forward to take a 50 percent cut in pay from $2.5 million. His contract expires June 30.

AS Roma and Internazionale of Milan are interested in acquiring Baggio, whose transfer fee could be as much as $13 million. He is asking for a three-year deal for $7.5 million.

Corriere della Sera reported Tuesday that some Japanese clubs and Spain’s Real Madrid have been in talks with Baggio’s agent and Juventus officials. Corriere said clubs in the J-League may offer a two-year deal for $8 million.

Baggio said he will talk of his future _ and of a possible transfer _ after the Italian Cup final against Parma on June 11.
