Villanova 65, Providence 57
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Senior Dwayne McClain scored 18 points in leading No. 14 Villanova to a 65-57 Big East victory over Providence Wednesday night in the second game of a college basketball double-header at the Palestra.
In the first game, sophomores Perry Bromwell and Chris Elvey each scored 25 points to lead Pennsylvania to an 86-71 victory over American University.
Villanova hit its first five shots and led 11-2 on an Ed Pinckney jumper three minutes into the game. But reserve guard Matt Palazzi rallied the Friars, and his two free throws with 1:22 left in the half cut the lead to 32-28.
McClain’s hot shooting in the second half pushed the Villanova lead to 48-38 with 11:49 left, and at one point he scored eight straight points.
After Don Brown’s layup brought Providence to within 48-42, Villanova ran off seven in a row and raced to a 59-44 advantage on a three-point play by Harold Pressley at the 3:18 mark.
Only a late 10-2 Providence spurt, including six points by Ernie Lewis, made the final score close.
The Wildcats are now 13-4, 5-2 in the Big East, while Providence is 8-10, 1-5.
Pinckney had 14 and Pressley 13 for Villanova, while Palazzi and Ryan Waller each had 10.
