Survey: Havasu is Arizona’s 17th safest city

September 1, 2018

Lake Havasu City is the 17th safest city in Arizona, according to a new ranking by a data collection company called SafeWise.

The company ranks Havasu behind Bullhead City, which was 16th on the list. The company reported that the 20 safest cities in Arizona cited just 1.7 violent crimes per 1,000 people, approximately 63 percent less than the national rate.

Arizona’s safest city was reported to be Buckeye, with a population of just over 64,000 and a violent crime rate of .54 crimes per 1,000 people. The survey was based on data from the 2016 FBI crime report.

Havasu, according to the survey, had 2.62 violent crimes and 22.66 property crimes per 1,000 residents.

The next safest cities were Oro Valley, Florence, Gilbert, Sahuarita and Marana. Besides Havasu and Bullhead City, the only other Northern Arizona city to make the list was Prescott Valley at 10th place.

Interestingly, a survey released in December by another data collection company said Lake Havasu City was the sixth safest city in Arizona. That company, called Safe Home, used the same FBI report but also looked at the officer-to-citizen ratio, crime trends and demographics. That report said Arizona contained 10 of the 500 safest cities in the United States. Shortly after that information was released, a crime expert told the News-Herald he didn’t put much stock into such surveys.

“I do not think that any of the rating systems deserve significant credibility,” said Richard Bloom, director of Terrorism, Intelligence, and Security Studies at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. “There are issues with trying to interpret whether a particular location is more or less safe,” he added.

He argued that the surveys use incomplete data, are easy to manipulate, and don’t represent the entire population.
