Charges reduced against student suspected in college fires
ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) — Prosecutors have reduced charges filed against a Massachusetts college student they say set several fires in her dormitory.
The Sun Chronicle reports that 22-year-old Janelys Pimentel is now facing burning personal property charges instead of arson charges after Thursday’s hearing.
It is unclear why the charges were reduced.
Authorities say the Wheaton College senior set several fires at the Norton school starting in November. No one was hurt.
Pimentel was a resident assistant in the dorm, and had no prior criminal record.
A psychologist previously determined Pimentel suffers post-traumatic stress from a break-in at her family’s Boston home, but there was no evidence she had a mental disease or defect.
She has been ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment while her case is pending.
