Lady O lets lead slip away late

CRETE -- The Beatrice softball team had defending state champion Crete on the ropes, but let a late lead slip away.

The Cardinals scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Lady O 11-10.

Up until that point, Beatrice was in control for most of the game. They scored four runs in the first inning. Whitney Schwisow started the rally when she was hit by a pitch with one out and Addie Barnard followed by reaching on a walk.

A passed ball moved the runners to second and third and Hannah Lytle’s two out, two RBI single made it 2-0. Tavia Hausman then immediately followed that with a two run home run to make it 4-0.

Neither’s team’s offense did much until the bottom of the fourth inning when a bunt single, a hit batsman and two walks led to the first of three Crete runs in the inning.

An error brought in two more runs, making it 4-3 after four innings.

Beatrice answered with a run in the fifth inning. Ashton Sandman doubled and scored on Lytle’s RBI single to make it 5-3.

Crete answered that with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to get back to within one.

Beatrice extended the lead to 7-4 in the sixth inning. Rylee Pangborn led off with a double and scored on Lexi Schwartz’s RBI double. Olivia Aden’s RBI single made it 7-4.

Three straight singles led to another run for Crete in the bottom of the sixth, making it 7-5.

In the top of the seventh, Lytle and Hausman both singled, setting the table for Reganne Henning’s three-run home run to make it 10-5.

Crete’s comeback in the bottom of the seventh started with a hit batsman and two singles, which made it 10-6. A two out triple brought in three more runs to make it 10-9.

A Beatrice error brought in the tying run. two straight walks loaded the bases and a walk-off RBI single made the final score 11-10.

Beatrice had 13 hits in the game, including three singles, three RBI’s and two runs scored by Lytle. Hausman had two hits including a home run, two RBI’s and a run scored.

Olivia Aden had two singles while Henning had a home run, Sandman, Pangborn and Schwartz had a double each and Jaci Berke had a single. Barnard had a single and was walked three times.

Beatrice falls to 19-3 on the season and hosted Ralston Tuesday night at Hannibal Park. For those results, see Thursday’s Daily Sun.
