Man Charged in Wife’s Shooting is Escaped North Carolina Felon
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) _ Only Gary Michael Reedy’s wife knew his real identity and it took a bullet to get her to reveal it.
Kay Clark Reedy was shot three times in the couple’s home in Round Lake Beach, 40 miles northwest of Chicago, on Sept. 2.
She tipped investigators to her husband’s true identity after he turned himself in Tuesday.
The man known as Reedy was really Scotty Joe Parker, who escaped from a North Carolina prison in 1982 while serving a three-year sentence for assaulting his ex-wife.
After his escape, he took the name of another inmate, remarried, gained a stepson, fathered a daughter and landed a job at an auto parts store, said Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Mermel.
``We were already checking his fingerprints against the FBI files, so the chances are the truth would have come out regardless,″ Mermel said.
Parker, 40, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in Kay Reedy’s shooting, as well as being a fugitive from justice. He was in jail Friday on $500,000 bond.
Mrs. Reedy is recovering in a Milwaukee hospital.
