DETROIT (AP) _ The NHL has suspended Detroit Red Wings forward Brendan Shanahan for two games for attempting to injure Tampa Bay's Darcy Tucker in a stick swinging fight.

``The timing couldn't be worse,'' he said after receiving news of the suspension Tuesday. ``We're kind of struggling right now.''

The fight occurred at the end of Sunday's game. Shanahan received a match penalty and Tucker was given a two-minute minor penalty for cross-checking.

There is no film of the incident.

``I wish there was. It probably would have cleared things up,'' Shanahan said. ``I got cross-checked, and he got two minutes. I gave him a bit of a high stick, and I got a match'' penalty.

Shanahan will lose $39,583 as a result of the suspension. He will miss tonight's game at Dallas and Friday's game against Pittsburgh.

The Red Wings recalled Marc Rodgers from the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League to fill in for Shanahan. In eight games with Manitoba, Rodgers has a goal, four assists and 13 penalty minutes.
