Randy Johnson to be Out Two to Three More Weeks

May 22, 1996

SEATTLE (AP) _ Randy Johnson will miss another two or three weeks with a bulging disc in his back, Seattle Mariners manager Lou Piniella said Tuesday.

Last year’s AL Cy Young Award winner went through an electromyogram, which measures impulse and nerve patterns in muscles, last Friday. It revealed no nerve damage to his back.

Johnson, 32, was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 13 because of an irritated nerve caused by his ailing back. The bulging disc will not require surgery, Dr. Larry Pedegana said.

``It is important that it did not show any nerve damage,″ said Pedegana, the Mariners’ team orthopedic specialist. ``However, it is also significant that Randy is still feeling discomfort.″

Pedegana said nerve irritation caused by disc problems in the back is a common condition among major-league pitchers.

``I’m sure that if we lined up all the pitchers in the majors, we’d find a few with bulging discs,″ he said. ``The disc usually continues to bulge, the irritation usually quiets down and people go about their lives with it _ even big-league pitchers.″

Johnson has had sporadic back problems in the past, usually during spring training.

Johnson is 5-0 with a 3.83 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 44 2-3 innings. He has won a club-record 12 consecutive games over two seasons.
