_Brian Gionta, Devils, scored two goals in New Jersey’s 6-3 victory over Pittsburgh.

_Fredrik Modin and John Grahame, Lightning. Modin scored twice and Grahame posted his first shutout as Tampa Bay beat Atlanta 6-0.

_Chuck Kobasew, Flames, scored two goals in leading Calgary to a 3-1 victory over Edmonton.


Jaromir Jagr recorded his first hat trick with the Rangers in Thursday night’s 5-4 loss to the Islanders. It was his first three-goal game since Feb. 4, 2003, when he was with Washington. ... Alexander Ovechkin scored both Washington goals in a 3-2 loss to Carolina. Ovechkin has a point in each of the Capitals’ eight games, the longest scoring streak in the league.


Nashville won its sixth straight to open the season by beating St. Louis 3-2 on Thursday night. The Predators have won half of their games by shootout and own the NHL’s best mark at 6-0-0.


New Jersey ran the Penguins’ season-opening winless streak to a franchise-record seven games by winning 6-3 Thursday night. The Penguins are 0-3-4 after never going more than the first six games of a season without winning.


Buffalo scored two power-play goals to snap an 0-for-27 slump and beat Boston 4-3 Thursday night.
