Lawsuit: Boy, 12, suffered brain damage in bullying incident

August 14, 2019

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawsuit claims a 12-year-old boy suffered permanent brain damage after being bullied at a Los Angeles charter school.

KABC-TV reports Wednesday that the suit alleges Animo Westside Middle School didn’t do enough to protect the boy.

Video of the January 2018 incident shows the boy being punched by an 8th grader before other students crowd around.

According to the lawsuit, the 12-year-old lost consciousness twice after he was put in a chokehold.

Ben Meiselas, the family’s attorney, says it’s not kids being kids — but a violent assault. The suit seeks unspecified damages.

The court filing targets the school and Green Dot, the organization that manages it.

Green Dot said in a statement that it’s concerned by the incident and committed to keeping its students safe.
