EUGENE, Ore. (AP) _ A man drowned while trying to save three people who waded into a river and were caught in its current, witnesses said.
Travis Jay Conner, 23, was one of several onlookers who jumped into the McKenzie River near Eugene on Saturday to save a 25-year-old woman, her 6- year-old daughter and a male friend.
Another rescuer, David Burson, said he saw Conner lying face down on the river bottom, but could not reach him because of the overpowering current.
″I’m going to have nightmares about this for the rest of my life,″ Burson said.
Others were able to rescue Terri Geary, her daughter, Kaycie, and their friend, Tim Wilson.
″I got two out of three, OK?″ said Richard Dyer, who saved Geary and her daughter. ″That’s all I can say. If I knew the kid was in the water, I’d have gotten him, too.″
