Dutch Trying To Attract More Gay American Vacationers
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ The state tourism bureau is trying to get more American gays to visit the Netherlands.
Marcel Baltus of the Netherlands Tourism Bureau said Thursday that research by the bureau’s New York office indicated homosexual men in the United States are likely to have a significantly higher disposable income than other American tourists, and are far more frequent travelers.
″They don’t generally have children to support,″ Baltus said.
Ads sponsored by the bureau, an airline and a car rental firm ran this month in nine U.S. publications aimed at gay readers.
The traditionally liberal Dutch capital has a large and open homosexual community.
The city, host to this month’s International Conference on AIDS, has erected a pink granite monument to memorialize gays persecuted throughout history.
