Salvation Army Winter Coat Drive begins
While it seems to some like summer has barely ended, others in the community are already wondering how they will stay warm this winter.
The Salvation Army gives out winter coat vouchers to families and individuals. This year, coats can be donated directly at The Salvation Army Family Service Stores in Rochester on Frontage Road and Ninth Street next to Kmart.
Donations of winter coats will be accepted from now until the end of winter in April or May of 2019.
Last year, The Salvation Army distributed more than 200 winter coat vouchers, many of them resulting in winter coats for an entire family. They could exceed that number in 2018. This year, it will also give winter coat vouchers to Rochester area schools, so that children will be able to stay warm.
“Minnesota can be a very dangerous place to live if people are not properly equipped to handle the cold,” said Rebecca Snap, the Rochester Salvation Army’s director of community engagement. “We really encourage people to go through their closets and donate the gently used coats they don’t need, because there are people in this community that do.”
