RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Loic Pietri of France upset Avtandili Tchrikishvili of Georgia to win the 81-kilogram division at the judo world championships in Brazil on Thursday.
The 16th-ranked Pietri scored early against the second-ranked Tchrikishvili then held on to clinch the gold at the Maracanazinho Arena.
The bronze medals went to Ivan Vorobev of Russia and Alain Schmitt of France.
No. 1-ranked Yarden Gerbi of Israel took the women’s gold in the 63-kilogram division by beating No. 2-ranked Clarisse Agbegnenou of France.
Agbegnenou briefly passed out after Gerbi’s strangulation move that earned her the title less than a minute into the fight.
