Charlie Brown comes to Beaver Dam

October 11, 2018

Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre will present a musical full of charm and wit for its last main stage production at the Spring Street building starting Wednesday.

“You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” directed by Carla Woebbeking, explores life through the eyes of Charlie Brown and his friends in the “Peanuts” gang. This revue of songs and short scenes is based on the beloved Charles M. Schulz comic strip.

The classic musical comedy appeared onstage first in 1967 and a revised version made its Broadway debut in 1999. BDACT will present the revised version.

Woebbeking said she loves this show, having directed the original version in Columbus and the revised version in Cambria-Friesland.

“The essence of the comic strip is really brought to life in it,” she said. “The version we’re doing includes the character Sally and not the character Peppermint Patty, which was in the original.”

Audiences can expect to be entertained by many of their favorite comic strip friends. Bossy Lucy is hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder, who doesn’t give her the time of day. Perfectionist Sally is still mocking blanket-toting Linus, Snoopy is in the doghouse and “blockhead” Charlie Brown is in rare form. Brief vignettes span the months from Valentine’s Day to Beethoven Day, from wild optimism to utter despair.

“I want people to know this is not a kids’ show, and what I mean by that is that everyone will enjoy it,” Woebbeking said. “Adults will find it sweet and nostalgic and full of sophisticated humor, but it’s totally suitable and appropriate for the whole family. There’s a lot of fun music and action holding the scenes together.”

The production features a small cast and simple staging. Cody Lindau plays the part of Charlie Brown, along with cast members Christina Frake as Sally, Mark Wegner as Schroeder, Judy Bell Hein as Lucy, Peter Larson as Linus and Rebecca Schmidt as Snoopy.

“Judy is a veteran performer and has been involved with BDACT for many, many years,” Woebbeking said. “She adores this show and her part and looked forward to doing it here; this place is very sentimental to her.”

Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre will move to a new home at the end of the year when the organization opens its Fine Arts Center on Maple Avenue in downtown Beaver Dam.

Harv Woebbeking is the assistant director for “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Beth Jewell and Kathi Gallus are co-producers and Paul Kennedy is the pit conductor for the show.
